The Life Of A Showgirl Aka A Hairdresser
You’ve heard of the life of a showgirl—but honestly, hairdressers are right up there with them.
From the makeup to the outfits, we’re expected to look put together at all times. Always polished. Always professional. Because let’s be real—no one wants a diva behind the chair. We carry the pressure of being “on” every single day, knowing we’re constantly seen, constantly judged, constantly noticed the moment we step out the door.
Truthfully? We’re put together about 95% of the time. The other 5%? That’s the breakdown in the back room—followed by pulling it together in 30 seconds flat and walking back onto the floor like nothing ever happened.
Now let’s talk about the reality. A never-ending wardrobe—because somehow everything we wear ends up stained (and still… no apron). Outfits that are overdressed for anywhere else but feel completely normal in the salon. Smiling through the stress, no matter what kind of day we’re having.
Because technically? We are the entertainment. Whether it’s one hour or eight, we’re performing—engaging, connecting, creating—and it’s draining in a way people don’t always see.We adapt constantly. Schedules change, clients run late, time gets tight—and we adjust without missing a beat. We’ve mastered the art of “fake it till you make it,” even on the hardest days.
We’re expected to stay relevant—always. Posting on Instagram, on TikTok, but not too much. Keeping up with every new trend, every product, every shift in the industry. Always evolving, but never overwhelming. Always present, but never too much. And somehow, through all of that, we’re still expected to show up as the “perfect” version of ourselves.
That’s the life of a hairdresser.
A little bit showgirl, a little bit therapist, a little bit artist—and a whole lot of resilience.
